The plot

This award-winning brash comedy follows the friendship of three Asian American Queens natives as they struggle to make ends meet and realize accept adulting isn’t what their immigrant parents taught them it’d be. Best friends, Sarah (Cindy Chu), Kim (Spring Inés Peña) and Gia (Carolina Do) learn that relationship goals and career achievements don’t necessarily equate to success, and experience the complicated intersection of being first and second generation Asian Americans.

Characters

Sarah

Sarah

Sarah was born in Queens, and raised by immigrant parents who struggled to make ends meet. Her mom has always been a huge influence in her life, and taught her to be the “ideal” Taiwanese American child. She seemingly has her life together, she has her MPA degree, a political canvassing job, and lives with her gorgeous fiance, David whom her mom set her up with. When Sarah finds David cheating on her with another man, she’s heartbroken and embarrassed. She’s afraid to lose face amongst her family, and struggles to untangle the adulting rules her mother has taught her. She tries to improve her community as a political canvasser, and searches for another “mother approved” Asian American boyfriend until both aspects of her life backfire. Ultimately she’s forced to look deeper into herself, and understand who she truly is away from her mother’s culture.
Gia

Gia

The oh, so, free spirited, Gia, comes from a mixed family of Irish and Taiwanese. She’s the opposite of stability. Her aversion to commitment keeps her from staying in one place, let alone in one relationship. Though she comes off as flighty and makes bad decisions most of the time, she’s actually pretty wise and gives deep and thoughtful advice...as long as they’re for others and not herself. After failing out of college twice and traveling the world on her parents’ dime, Gia finds herself financially cut off. Though she’d much rather be an Instagram Star, she enrolls at F.IT. for her BA degree in fashion and unexpectedly falls for her thesis professor. She surprises herself and her best friends when her relationship with Prof. John turns into more than a fling. But things get complicated when she begins an internship at Prof. John’s fashion company, where she meets his ex-wife and co-founder, Lisa. Gia becomes suspicious of Lisa when Lisa takes Gia under her wing.
Kim

Kim

Kim, a legal assistant in New York City, has never had it easy. She’s of Korean descent, and was raised in Bolivia. After moving from Bolivia in junior high school, she and her family struggled to live comfortably in a tiny apartment in Queens. Always motivated to keep her family financially stable, as a high schooler, Kim took up a job in a nail salon to help pay rent. However, when her family leaves New York, she becomes anxious and looks for any way to live a secure life. A hustler by nature, Kim fears being poor, and finds herself hoarding as many free samples as possible: shampoo, toothpaste, food, and random furniture. At her predominately white law firm, Kim finally feels anchored until she meets her new competition, Lucy, the only other Asian American legal assistant. Lucy’s out to prove she’s the best of the best and is willing to sabotage anyone who gets in her way. Kim’s never one to back down, and has finally met her match.
Jesse

Jesse

Jesse, a down-to-earth, chill dude who is constantly friend-zoned, becomes Gia’s newest buddy. Shy about asking girls out, Gia helps build him up, and attempts to bring out his fun side by acting as his wingwoman. A fellow student at F.I.T. and intern at Prof. John’s company, Jesse strives to be the next Alexander Wang.
Prof. John

Prof. John

Prof. John, a newly divorced, handsome and athletic teacher at F.I.T., runs a Senior Thesis class, and is head of his fashion company. Always professional when it comes to work and life, his one exception turns out to be Gia. Her free-spirit gives him a spark of joy that he hasn’t felt in years from his marriage. As much as he tries to separate their professional and personal relationship, the more their worlds collide.
David

David

David, a Taiwanese, pre-med student is the kind of guy all parents would love - well mannered, good upbringing, and a future doctor. An accomplished poet and musician, he dreams of pursuing the arts, but would never want to shame his family. Though he always knew he was gay, it’s been the hardest thing to admit to himself, let alone to his parents and fiance, Sarah. When he reconnects with his old college buddy, Simon, a spark ignites in them, and David is forced to finally reveal his truth to Sarah and himself.
Lucy

Lucy

She’s the new litigation assistant, and very good at her job. She’s from Manhattan, comes from a wealthier background, very educated. She also has her eyes set on law school. She doesn’t adhere to camaraderie amongst Asian Americans. She doesn’t speak Chinese because she didn’t want to be made fun of growing up so she swore it off. She makes fun of Asians at her own expense, but at the same time sees a separation between herself and being Asian. She and Kim both see each other as a competition in a way. She does she think she’s better than Kim, and other Asians. Also doesn’t help that they’re the only 2 minorities on that floor...well at least the only 2 Asians.
