Full Synopsis

The Experience For You

There's temporal displacement and social anxiety, the pressures of commerce and the pressures of creativity, a search for belonging, and a journey through family history, an encounter with censorship and a confrontation with social pressure, an exploration of film and memory and an 80s icon with an identity crisis, in a selection showcasing a more experimental approach to filmmaking.

Film(s) To Be Screened

Tether

A short film written, directed, edited and produced by Eva Justine Torkkola (www.evajusttorks.com).

Country of origin: Australia.

Director's Statement: The relationship between parents and children has always fascinated me – in this film Tether we explore a fractured father/daughter relationship through the characters of Jack and his daughter June. With June’s mother passing away when June was just 6 years old, Jack was left to raise his daughter on his own. Battling a life in seclusion in the Australian bushland, unable to speak English very well, and grieving for his lost wife, their father-daughter relationship spirals out of control. We see how loss affects these two people in two such different (yet such similar) ways. Moved by captured moments in time, and exploring the relationships that are strained or tested, this short film is a passion project that grew from my own family story.

tx-reverse

What happens in a cinema when you film it at a resolution of 10K with a 360° camera and then reverse the spatial and temporal axes? In a way never before shown, "tx-reverse" shows the collision of reality and cinema and draws its viewers into a vortex in which the familiar order of space and time is suspended.

Winner of 29 international film awards!

Austria/Germany 2018, short film, DCP, color, 1:2,39 / "tx-reverse 360°": Austria/Germany 2019, installation in 360°, 10K

Length: 5 min.

Concept and direction: Martin Reinhart, Virgil Widrich

Music and sound design: Siegfried Friedrich

Exposure

A group of people gather at a reception. The occasion of the event remains unclear. Everyone attempts to act appropriately. Waiting for something to happen in silence. Anticipation gradually turns into anxiety.

Supermarket

Synopsis - A voice says "I would like to make you feel nice and comfortable, and to empty your mind of every single thought..." Thus begins the story, with an invitation to make you fall asleep, in a calm, deep, and peaceful rest, while a chaotic landscape, crowded with people, sets up on the screen. The crowd doesn't seem to have anywhere to go, but they are actually sleeping and they need to dream.

XCTRY

Brown re-works 16mm footage that he shot years ago during a cross-country road trip from Chicago to Las Vegas. The spatial discontinuities of the road trip are rendered as visual continuities across three frames as Brown goes in search of the next town to fall in and out of love with.

Booted from the limelight, Max Headroom now roves the video signal on the search for meaning. Once summoned to the screen, he talks to the audience in hopes of remembering his past life. As we watch Max, (and as he continues to watch us), he begins to understand what it will take to escape from his purgatory. - USA

Acting

Every day we see images of perfection: the optimal body, nutrition, life. All we have to do is make an effort and show some discipline. At least that's the message.

Self-tuning is necessary in order to belong.

And beware: Don’t show any weakness.

Virtual Memory

As we are confronted with the receding dominance of analog image making and entering a new era in the evolution of digital media, our experience of images and information has become increasingly intangible. One part history and one part poetry, Virtual Memory is a meditation on the essence of mechanical image-making and its impact on human consciousness, from the physical process of photography and film, to the alternate universe created by computers and virtual reality. Using a compilation of found material, the film bids a kind of fond farewell to the 20th century.

Once there was a time when images were made from head to hand.

Devices came into being which allowed the chemical capture of light.

Persistence of vision, motion.

Electrical capture of light. Distribution and broadcast, reception with the set.

Computers - the pixel - a fraction of light - more like pointillism, a comic.

The speed, multiplicity of transmission - active viewership.

The generation of synthetic images to replicate the real, not necessarily in terms of realism of representation, but in terms of realism in interaction.

Interaction, an extension of active viewing. Randomness increases.

Screen being replaced by an immersive experience. Projection of a holographic image.

Virtual becomes a replacement space.
