Every Saturday night, in California’s southern San Joaquin Valley, an informal gathering has been taking place for decades. There, in the darkness, they hold street races on dusty rural roads, searching for a moment of catharsis after a grueling work week. Through a blend of observation, immersion, and poetry, How to Breathe in Kern County serves as a vehicle for entering into this world so often denigrated and unseen.
