Near the end of the Texas Revolution in 1836, Lillian, a teenage girl armed with a musket, tries to protect a pack of multi-ethnic orphans from the soldiers in the Mexican Army who killed her Grammy following a skirmish with colonists. With little food to survive on, Lillian leads the children far away from her family homestead, Merryland Farm. When they encounter a runaway slave, news of the war’s ending sets them on the long journey back to the farm. Their safety is short-lived as a new threat quickly emerges—from a pair of colonists. With the lives of the children and a new friend at risk, Lillian must find a way to save them all, get them back to Merryland Farm, and keep a promise to Grammy.
