Sometimes you have to get in where you can fit in. This variety pack of films starts off with our most culturally relevant selections and ends with one of our completely unique micro shorts. This group of shorts includes the winner of our most prestigious award " The Spirit of Idlewild Award". Can you guess which film it is?

Pie A LA Mode

Known for its award-winning pie, Julian, CA serves up a slice of history revealing its confederate origins and the Black pioneers who homesteaded there.

Director Biography- V. C Rhone 

From the Syrian border as a missionary, to being commended by President Obama for assisting abused women, v.c. rhone's life experiences breathe life into her writing. She completed her undergraduate studies in Film and Television Production at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and was trained by Academy Award Winner, Carol Dysinger (Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone If You're a Girl). 

She was recently a finalist in The Quarantine Monologues produced by Leah Daniels Butler (Coming 2 America, Precious, Empire, Lee Daniels' The Butler, Being Mary Jane). Her comedic script, "Pastor Chris," was a finalist for the CEG Half-Hour Television Comedy Screenwriting Workshop. This granted her an opportunity to train with Primetime Emmy Nominee and famed Showrunner, Jim O'Doherty (3rd Rock from the Sun, Kickin' It, and The Tracy Morgan Show).

v.c. is a multi-format writer, producer, director who transforms the good, the bad and the ugly into stories that shine a light on women, cultures and social injustice.

Salt River Water Walk

In February 2020, Sharon Day (Ojibwe) led a group of Water Walkers through the Arizona desert to walk for the Salt River. Through animation and live-shot footage, this documentary travels with the Salt River Water Walkers, describing this Indigenous-led ceremony as it creates community and builds relationships with the earth through the shared goal to care for the water.


Fierce Funny and Fly

In 2017 a group of talented women joined forces to create a safe space for their diverse comedic voices. The outgrowth of that mission became the Black Girl Giggles Comedy Festival.

Fierce Funny & Fly examines the friendship and the challenges behind the festival, the first exclusively for Black Women comics.


Oda a los Frijoles / Ode to the Beans

A literary and visual rendition to beans, this experimental short merges a cooking recipe with archival footage of immigrants and fieldworkers.


What Lies Upstairs

What Lies Upstairs” is a spooky tale that follows a curious young girl as she leaves the comfort of her bedroom to investigate a mysterious liquid dripping from the ceiling. 


Ozhigaabawi (One Stands Ready)

Female Jingle Dancers and Male Fancy Dancers offer a combined piece in honor and recognition of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (specifically amongst Native American and Alaskan Native women)
