DIASPORA SHORTS: The Critics, A Better Place, Superheroes Wear Hoodies / STEM Roots

Film(s) To Be Screened

Superheroes Wear Hoodies

A group of British Black youths from one of London’s most notorious estates defy public perception by supporting their local community when they needed it the most. Not all superheroes wear capes. Sometimes they come dressed in hoodies.

The Critics

A documentary about a young collective of filmmakers in a remote part of Nigeria whose self-taught approach to filmmaking has captured the attention of the internet and Hollywood.

STEM Roots

Many families are turning to genetic engineering to better connect with the family roots from where they originate. Through DNA analysis, some are finding that stories passed down from generation to generation are either validated through test results or proven to be way off base. Knowing more about your family of origin, also leads to a renewed sense of purpose, belonging, pride, community and self-esteem.

When applied to hands-on projects in genetic engineering, this knowledge can be used to help students build confidence in the STEM capabilities, while learning more about their ancestral history. ESTe2M Builders is a company that aims to further Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Math (STe2M) education by providing engaging experiences and thrilling hands-on activities for secondary and post-secondary students.

A Better Place

A Better Place is an in depth look at the toxic legacy of British colonial-era laws, which criminalise consensual same-sex love, while at the same time allowing perpetrators of sexual violence to go unpunished. More than 70 countries still criminalise gay sex. In over 30, rape within marriage is still legal. Behind these statistics are the people whose lives are paralysed by these archaic laws.

Meet the LGBTQ+ people whose love is criminalised; who face the daily struggle of state-sanctioned hatred. Meet the women who endure sexual violence in their homes, with no recourse to justice. And meet the global network of activists, lawyers and legislators striving for equality and justice for everyone.
