The JustUs Film Festival is a film series designed to unify and educate people about inequality in the United States during the July 4th week. This festival will teach viewers about the history and impact of injustices, systematic oppression and institutionalized racism. From the screenings, we want viewers to gain new and deeper perspectives of the problem, and create actionable plans on solving the issues that affect all people.

More Than Just Black Films

Social injustice is a systemic problem that is larger than just any one group. It affects multiple people across many different cultures and ethnicities for 100s of years. We can solve this problem not by having a "them vs us" mentality, but standing together in solidarity. This means Blacks, Native Americans, Hispanics, women, the disenfranchised, their allies and everyone who is affected taking the time to learn each other's point of view, and fighting for the same goal.

A Gentle Magic explores the resurgence in skin-lightening products in South Africa as an in-road to the country’s changing social landscape. This film explores the issue of skin lightening and its history, as well as its cultural context, medical implications, and possible solutions. But far more than that, it’s a film made for black women, and for the sake of itself as art. It’s a celebration of black beauty and questions, ‘Why would someone want to change their skin?’, whose answers are multiple, contradictory and, ultimately, incomplete.

The Black Panther Party was founded in Oakland, California, in 1966 with the purpose of defending African-Americans from police brutality and violent racism. Chapters formed in several U.S. cities – including Kansas City in 1969, less than a year after deadly rioting devastated east-side neighborhoods.

The documentary Legacy: Spirit of the Black Panthers examines the history of the Kansas City organization and its founder, Pete O’Neal, now exiled in Tanzania. Produced by local filmmakers Jermaine ThomasLyle Gibson, and Jacquey Valentine, it looks beyond the militancy associated with the party and focuses on the services the Black Panthers provided to the African-American community, including free breakfast programs, clothing drives, health screenings, and political and educational literacy.
